If you've already watched all eight episodes of Wonder Man on Disney+, I have some specific spoiler thoughts on the season that go beyond what I wrote in my review, coming up just as soon as we find Josh Gad...

1. It's a Hollywood bromance, not a superhero show.
Simon has the same name as the guy from the comics, has some of the same powers (comic book Wondy can't generate earthquakes by getting angry, but is strong and can fly), and is interested in acting as a way to deal with his neuroses. But this isn't really a superhero show. He's mostly just trying to hide his powers, and before the final scene, the only real action is brief, and usually in a comedic context, like the lighthearted subplot in the seventh episode involving the incriminating GoPro footage and the homemade candy.
Instead, the emphasis is on a mix of showbiz satire, showbiz love letter, and bromantic comedy. The main tension of the season is like any story where a couple comes together under false pretenses that only one of them knows about, and by the time the relationship feels real to them, it's too late — the original sin seems unforgivable. Trevor approaches Simon because he's trying to avoid being sent back to prison. But the affection he develops for this big, handsome goofball is absolutely real, and palpable. Whether we're following the two on a quest to make a self-tape, or just listening to Trevor tell wild showbiz stories to Simon, the chemistry between Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley is fantastic. The more famous Marvel projects work in large part because of how the leads work together: Downey with Paltrow (really, Downey with anyone), Evans with Atwell, Hemsworth with Hiddleston. This will not go down in history like those — it's entirely possible that I'm writing this for an audience of five people (one of whom is my friend Brian Cronin, who wrote this exhaustive list of all of Simon's movie and TV credits from the comics) — but the stars' bond is much closer to that vicinity than you would have expected from an orphaned project like this.
Though speaking of how good the stars are with one another...
