Calling it quits when it's not the TV show — it's you

Is it fair to wish for a version of Hulu's 'Paradise' that wasn't about a post-apocalyptic bunker?

Every now and then, I'll label an item in my Friday newsletter as "This is not a review." It's where I didn't watch all the episodes of a show that I was given, or in some other way feel like my opinion isn't quite informed enough to merit the official treatment.

The second season of Paradise (whose first three episodes are now streaming on Hulu) qualifies for the Not A Review treatment, in the sense that Hulu gave me seven episodes, and I tapped out after only four. But the specific reason I stopped is why I don't want to call this a review. Because after four episodes, I realized that I liked a number of aspects of Paradise — just not the thing that the show is actually about. In this case, and with a variety of other shows over the years, it's not them — it's me.
