What happens when the hangout comedy version of the show is in conflict with the thoughtful character study version of the show?

Shrinking recap: Season 3, episode 8: ‘Depression Diet’
Gaby struggles with a tragedy, and Jimmy and Sofi have a second “first date”

Shrinking aspires to be both a hangout comedy and a sincere exploration of the psyches of these three therapists and the people they love. More often than not, the show deftly balances those ideas. Every now and then, though, you get an episode like "Daddy Issues," where the two concepts appear in opposition to one another.

By far the best story is the title plot, which for now appears to bring Jimmy and Sofi's relationship to an end. From a hangout comedy perspective, this is disappointing. Segel and Smulders are so good together. And we know from Smulders' other work that she's an ensemble comedy Swiss Army knife, who can work well opposite almost any kind of energy, whether as the straight woman or the fool. So I'll be sad if this is really the last we see of her — or, at least, if the season ends with her and Jimmy apart for good.
