In Season One, the night shift crew arrived at the start of PittFest. So while we eventually got a sense of Abbot (emotionally damaged but also the best man to ever live), Shen (as chill as his beloved ice coffees), and Ellis (confident and direct), it still felt like we were watching the day shift, now with some very special guests.
With no comparable crisis at this stage of the season, there's a more traditional handoff, both within the show's fictional world and within the show itself. Other than Princess and Joy (and, eventually, Ogilvie and Emma), the day shifters are still around. But for the most part, they're either doing paperwork or lending a hand to their counterparts while still in the building. It doesn't quite feel like my proposed Shawn Hatosy-led The Pitt: Night Shift(*) spinoff, but it nonetheless feels like the creative team is trying to be true to the real-time structure. Even if the daytime docs are present, they're no longer the ones in charge around here.
(*) Never to be confused for the show with the greatest key art of all time.
