TV Is Good, Episode 8: 'Elle,' 'Hannibal,' and the prequel problem

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the TV Is Good podcast, where Kathryn VanArendonk and I look at notable television shows from the present and the past. In this week's episode, Kathryn and I tackle the subject of TV prequels from a few angles. First, we talk about Prime Video's new Legally Blonde prequel series Elle, which I wrote about last week:

Does the world need a ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel? Or any prequels?
Looking at the challenge of making a prequel through the lens of Prime Video’s ‘Elle’

From there, we broaden the scope to look at notable prequels that did and didn't work, and why, before closing it out with a look at the most unlikely great prequel of them all, NBC's Hannibal. As one of the posters on the What's Alan Watching? Discord put it upon learning about the pairing of these two shows, "Elle Woods and Hannibal Lecter, together at last. This is my design(er label)."

And because it's the first Monday of the month, that means it's time for our next Patreon episode, where we talk about "START," the ironically-titled series finale of The Americans. Come join us for a totally normal and calm conversation about a show we both love, one of the great series-concluding episodes ever, and that time that Keri Russell gave me a cookie. Here's a preview:

Next week on the main feed, we'll be looking into tales of westward expansion, from Netflix's wholesome new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie to the very first episode of Deadwood. The latter segment will really only cover that episode, so if you're early in your binge, we won't spoil anything big that happens later. Deadwood is streaming on HBO Max.

The podcast also has its own social media accounts on InstagramBlueSkyThreads, and TikTok.

To quote the hosts of every show you listen to, please remember to subscribe, rate/like, and review, because the algorithm uses that data to decide what shows to promote to people who don't already know about them. Please help us beat the algorithm at its own game. You can also write to the two of us specifically at tvisgoodpod@gmail.com.
